Spencer

Little Bit Herd

Spencer joined Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center in November 2002 and served with distinction until his retirement in March 2015. A Norwegian Fjord known for his calm demeanor and steady presence, Spencer became an invaluable member of our herd and a trusted partner in both Therapy and Adaptive Riding programs.

Spencer’s journey to Little Bit was as special as he was. He was generously donated as part of a family’s annual tithe—a family with an exceptional herd of Norwegian Fjords, Haflingers, and New Forest Ponies. Little Bit was given the extraordinary opportunity to select any horse from their herd. During the selection process, then-Executive Director Kathy Alm, a novice horse person at the time, was helping evaluate horses by sitting on them while being led around. When Kathy was aboard Spencer, the entire herd suddenly came galloping over the crest of a hill. Everyone feared the worst, but Spencer stood perfectly still and calm, protecting his rider without hesitation. That moment confirmed what we would later experience every day: Spencer was destined to be an outstanding member of Little Bit’s herd.

Throughout his years of service, Spencer demonstrated many qualities that made him exceptional. His gentle temperament, consistent movement, and willing attitude made him a favorite among therapists and instructors alike. Spencer had a way of making everyone feel safe and confident, whether they were taking their first steps toward independence or working through challenges; he was often the first choice for new client evaluations due to his remarkable tolerance and reliability. Spencer worked equally well in hippotherapy sessions, where his lovely gait supported many patients’ goals, and in adaptive riding lessons, where his responsiveness empowered riders to learn new skills.

While Spencer was known for his professionalism, he also had a playful side—those occasional flashes of Fjord mischief that reminded us of his spirited nature. Yet even in those moments, his kindness and patience never wavered.

Spencer’s impact extended far beyond the arena. He helped clients reach milestones, brought confidence and joy to families, and inspired countless volunteers and staff. His legacy will continue to resonate for years to come.
