Bjorn

Little Bit Herd

Bjorn served at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center from 1996 to 2011, and during that time became one of the most trusted and versatile partners in our herd. I had the privilege of working closely with him from 2004–2009, and he remains one of the horses who defined an era at Little Bit.

What made Bjorn remarkable wasn’t just his sturdy Norwegian Fjord build or his striking appearance—though he certainly turned heads everywhere he went. It was his incredible awareness of when he was carrying precious cargo. Bjorn could be bold and forward in his warm-up, but the moment he approached the mounting ramp, he transformed. He would plant himself with quiet confidence, ready to welcome a rider or patient who needed his balance, his sensitivity, and his heart.

His versatility was something we treasured. Bjorn served clients of all abilities, from young therapy patients experiencing the healing rhythm of the horse for the first time, to independent riders learning new skills. He was equally at home in therapy treatments as he was in adaptive riding lessons or heading off to horse shows, where he seemed to enjoy showing off!

Bjorn wasn’t only a teacher for his riders, he was also a teacher for us as staff. He was instrumental in helping many of us learn to long line correctly, and his talent in long lines was matched by his ability under saddle. Bjorn could step up to Second Level dressage, making him a joy to school.

The therapy team especially valued the high‑quality, three‑dimensional movement Bjorn provided. It was rhythmic, consistent, and beautifully organized—exactly what hippotherapy patients benefit from most. Because of this, he was always in high demand and always rose to the occasion.

Like most Fjords, Bjorn possessed a robust appetite. . . and an excellent sense of opportunity! Anyone who handled him out on the Tolt Pipeline Trail learned quickly that his polite exterior masked a strategic mind. Even a momentary lapse in a handler’s attention could result in Bjorn diving for a mouthful of grass! These small moments of mischief only made him more endearing. They reminded us that beneath the professionalism and the steady work ethic was a horse with a bright personality and a sense of humor.

Bjorn’s impact on the people he served is hard to summarize because it showed up everywhere—in a child’s improved balance, in a rider’s newfound confidence, in the quiet pride of a volunteer who had helped him accomplish something meaningful.

When I think of Bjorn, the words that come to mind are professional, teacher, and trusted. Bjorn will always remain a cherished part of Little Bit’s history!
